Who needs a DOT drug and alcohol testing program?
DOT testing requirements apply to CDL drivers operating commercial vehicles covered by the applicable regulations, including vehicles with a gross weight rating of 26,001 lbs or more, vehicles designed for 16 or more occupants, and vehicles transporting hazardous materials that require a placard. Do owner-operators need a testing program?
Yes. Owner-operators subject to DOT drug and alcohol testing requirements must participate in a compliant random testing program, even when they are not employed by another company.
How do I get started?
Choose the appropriate service and complete the existing provider’s enrollment process. The source site states that an enrollment packet is provided within three business days. Participating drivers can then arrange required pre-employment testing at an approved testing facility.
How soon must a driver complete a random test?
Once notified of a random testing requirement, the driver must proceed immediately to the testing facility.
What about audits and annual reports?
The consortium supports the organization of program documentation, including policies, test results, enrollment records, MIS reports, and related forms.
When can I expect test results?
Alcohol test results can be printed at the approved facility. The source site states that negative DOT drug test results are generally reported within two to three business days. A non-negative result requires Medical Review Officer review before final determination.
What happens after a test?
Results are handled confidentially through proper channels. A Medical Review Officer (MRO) reviews possible medical explanations for non-negative results. Confirmed violations require removal from safety-sensitive duties and completion of the applicable return-to-duty process.
